Hi, I'm Balaji. I'm 34 years old, born and bred in the vibrant yet challenging landscape of Mumbai's slums. My journey has been a rollercoaster of trials, triumphs, and a relentless pursuit of a better future for myself, my family, and my community.
Over the years, I've worn many hats. From odd jobs to more stable employment, I've navigated the intricacies of survival in an environment where opportunities are scarce, and dreams often seem out of reach. However, it was my stint as a tour guide for other companies that truly ignited a fire within me.
For the past 15 years, I've been leading tours through the bustling streets of Mumbai, sharing stories, unravelling secrets, and showcasing the soul of the city to visitors from around the world. Yet, amidst the hustle and bustle, I couldn't shake off the nagging realization that the meagre earnings from these tours would never be enough to break the cycle of poverty that had gripped my life for so long.
It was this realization that spurred me to take the biggest risk of my life. In January 2023, I decided to go solo and launch my own tour business. It wasn't an easy decision—I had no guarantees, no safety net to fall back on. But I knew that if I wanted to change my life and the lives of others like me, I had to take the leap.
From the moment I launched my business, I poured my heart and soul into it. Every tour became an opportunity not just to showcase Mumbai's hidden gems but also to uplift and empower the marginalized communities within it. I wanted to create something more than just a business—I wanted to create a movement for change.
Today, I can see that my hard work is slowly paying off. Through sheer determination and unwavering dedication, I've not only improved my own livelihood but also created pathways for others to follow. My tour company provides employment opportunities, education, and training to individuals from the very communities I once called home.
But my mission is far from over. As a husband and father of two young children, my drive to create a brighter future for my family and for generations to come only grows stronger. Every day, I'm reminded of the importance of resilience, entrepreneurship, and the unwavering belief in the possibility of change.
